Playa del Carmen and Reef

Playa del Carmen is one of the most popular scuba-diving sites in the Mexican Caribbean, home to more than 60 different coral species and hundreds of species of fish

We will take you to some of the region’s most spectacular diving sites, thanks to our convenient location just 5.5 miles away from Playa del Carmen and near several other popular diving locations.

Guests will find diving for all levels, at depths ranging from 40 to 100 feet.

Boats leave 3 times daily from the Ocean Maya Royale’s own beach at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. The main diving sites are all just a 5-15 minute ride away:

  • Los Arcos. One of the best deep sites for current diving. Giant horse mackerels, turtles, and barracudas are all common sights. This site takes its name from the two low arches we will dive through.
  • Pared Verde. A 33-foot-tall wall covered with a variety of soft and hard coral species, with giant lobsters and rays in the sandy area. In spring and summer, large turtles can also be seen. Ideal for multi-level deep diving.
  • Mama Viña. This former shrimper, intentionally sunk in 1995, is 100 feet long. Perfect for multi-level deep diving at depths ranging from 60 feet, in the shallowest area, to 100 feet in the deepest, divers can explore part of the inside of the vessel, too.
  • Cerebros. One of the best 40-foot diving sites, Cerebros is bursting with brain coral. Hence its name: “Cerebros” means “brains” in Spanish. Divers will see crabs, lobsters, green moray eels, and endless schools and species of fish.
  • Cabezos. Rock formations covered with gorgonian and other types of coral. A favorite haunt for eagle rays.
  • Maroma. Dive in a strong current at a depth of up to 50 feet. This site boasts some of the greatest coral diversity in the region. Divers will see rays, barracudas, and, sometimes, turtles.
